Week 2-3
February 16, 2013

The pups are growing fast! One moment you still have vulnerable, needy, blonde little moles and the next moment you find 8 mini-Goldens that can walk, bark and play. Suddenly they go up to you when you stick your head in the whelping box, they give kisses and also respond to human invitations to frolic a bit! I love it/them, they're so much fun :-). Yesterday they had their first meal of porridge; some of them had to get used to it but today all 8 tucked in it enthusiastically! Below some pictures of the Porridge Party and a few other nice snapshots.

Day 20: good behaviour on the scale!
Female 'pink' looks so adorable in this position
Male 'grey' is biting the toy for play
Two sisters ('purple' and 'mint') teasing one another...
Playtime!! The females 'purple' and 'red'...

... and male 'grey' and female 'mint'

Their first meal of porridge!
Some needed a bit of encouragement to eat this funny stuff
All mummies seem to always wanna lick the bowl and Venice is no exception!
Letting go...

It's with profound grief that I have to report the unexpected passing of female ‘mix’ (Rocksett Trick Me Once)... In the first two weeks of her life she was a strong, healthy pup and grew just like her littermates. But last Thursdaynight she suddenly didn’t want to drink anymore and got weak. From that moment on we’ve continuously, 24 hours a day, taken care of her - my sister Irene, my good friend Lisette and I. Every hour she got some puppymilk through a syringe in her mouth, and ofcourse the vet also gave her the necessary medication. She was a huge fighter and an immense brave little girl, but this battle proved too heavy for her: on the Sunday afternoon, only 15 days old, she peacefully slipped away from us… You can be as careful as possible and take every (precautionary) measure but sometimes fate decides differently and as a human you just have to deal with it. Whether it was a virus or whatever, or whether there was (unnoticeable) something wrong with this puppygirl we will never know. What we do know is that the pain, the hurt and the disbelief is indescribable and nobody will ever understand why she didn’t get the chances she so deserved… We all miss her terribly and she will never be forgotten!
Other than this much too sad event there are luckily also positive developments as the other pups are still doing great and their loving mama continues to do her utmost best for her offspring. I draw a lot of strength from the way both Venice and her mother Yacime deal with the situation: they don't look back but focus on (and enjoy!) what is still there – which are definitely 8 gorgeous, lively, entrepreneurial puppies! They now have a nice weaning pen added to the whelping box and without hesitation or timidity very soon the first pups dived down the duckboard. After that the way up - back into the whelping box - was still a bit more difficult but they manage better each time. It's such a clever little bunch!

Day 19: two of the pups have their mummy all to themselves!
How he looks like his daddy! (male 'green')
Playing with one of the toys
Female 'pink' is also interested
Day 17: diving down the duckboard...

Male 'blue' trying to beat the toy ;-)
Discovering a new world
Male 'grey' already knows how to get back into the whelping box again!

In loving memory...
Female 'mix' (Rocksett Trick Me Once) - here 13 days old and taking a nice little nap; who would have thought she had to leave us fore good two days later...
This memorial with her last ribbon tied to it will be hanging above the puppypen as long as the litter is here and I will burn a candle for her every single day. Rest in peace, little sweetheart...
