Week 0-1
July 31, 2014
Tomorrow the pups will be a week old. A rather odd idea thinking it's only 6 days ago they were still in Venice's belly and we wondered how many puppies she was carrying. How great it is to know it involved 10 little miracles where all those concerned are now already addicted to!
I wrote earlier that the litter went through a reasonably large growth already, in the meantime something was added: the pups discovered they can screech ;-). On a regular basis one starts to yell if he/she doesn't agree on something or cannot get to the 'milkbar' fast enough. And also at times they argue a bit (haha), they sound like a bunch of parakeets then! More often though they are peacefully asleep near or on each other, in complete harmony. My my, they are quite something I can tell you!
Yesterday their nails have been clipped for the first time as they always have sharp edges that are very unpleasant for mummy; ofcourse their frontlegs are pushed against Venice's belly to let the milk run. The pups endured their pedicure-debut just fine, some felt it was a bit strange but that's only logical - it's without a doubt a strange sensation if somebody suddenly holds on to your paws and puts such a funny clipper to it! But I'm proud of them, they've all been really good genuinely.
Lastly, below some final pictures of this first week!
Day 6: this snapshot doesn't need any clarification...
Venice seeks some coolness every now and then by lying right in front of the fan
Male 'green' has landed on top of his sister 'orange'
Day 5: a contented little family!
I am so infatuated with this gal...
Nourishing the puppies and eating yourself is a fine match if you do it like this ;-)
Spoiled rotten!

How she again gives her all to her babies, that sweet mama Venice... A few times I've tried to persuade her to rest outside the whelping box and cool down a bit, but until now she absolutely wouldn't let her puppies out of her sight other than for a walk outside! But as of this morning she finally allows herself some ‘private time’ and now she regularly takes a nap on the cool floor, in front of the electric fan. Really refreshing for her, you can tell she benefits from it!
Being spoiled rotten by their mum the little ones ofcourse are thriving like crazy ;-). They have changed quite a lot in a short time; the pigmentation on the nose and paw pads has darkened
considerably, it looks really cute. And their little bodies are firm and chunky, they look just super! You can hardly get enough of looking at them and their stunning mother...

Day 4: devoted mummy!
Male 'green' and female 'brown'
Two almost-completely-black noses
Day 3: waiting in a basket during the daily cleaning of the whelping box
After that in a nice clean 'bed' :-)
Male 'red' and female 'yellow'
Female 'brown' balances on the frontlegs of Venice
The pups now merely devide their time between sleeping and... drinking
Day 2: just look at that, every time it feels like a miracle!
"Wrap your arms around me..." (the sisters 'brown' and 'mint')
Half of the litter: the males 'green' and 'black', female 'orange', male 'red' and female 'pink'
Multifunctional toy-ray!

Still deaf and blind, but só adorable...
Many puppies love this, leisurely hanging on the rail (here male 'black')
The beauty of nature...
July 25, 2014

The last hours of the pregnancy haven't been easy for Venice as the puppies announced themselves on yet again a very hot day. The future mummy spent most of the afternoon in the garden, where she had dug a few holes to lie in; not only for the coolness, but also to relieve the pressure from her very big belly! It was clear the delivery was on its way and just before the evening set in Venice really got restless and at 23:40 o'clock a heavy boy - male 'blue', weighing 560 grams! - was born. From then on all went as smoothly as one would hope for during labor and barely 5,5 hours later Venice gave birth to her 10th and final pup (male 'black'). On that same Friday morning, just 4 hours after the puppies were born, the vet came to check on the mummy and her newborn babies: all fine and in excellent health/condition! Needless to say I'm very proud of the tremendous job Venice has done delivering her babies and in such a natural, no-nonsense way. A word of thanks goes out to my friends Kees and Debby for being around to offer their help and support!

Day 1: she's so happy with her new offspring!
Male 'green' in the sunbathing-mode
Sweet, tolerant Venice!
Sound asleep (female 'purple')
Female 'yellow' (under) and female 'orange' (on top) together on their mummy's paw
Day of birth: Venice doesn't want to leave her pups for too long so she eats in the whelping box
Each puppy is just so perfect...
A lot of weight on these little ones!
The first born: male 'blue'

Some of the other pups

All 10 pups arrived sound & healthy and Venice takes such good care of them right away!
Some vanilla ice cream during the delivery helps to keep the energy level up
